Ys - III Wanderers from Ys Walkthrough These hints are based on the Super Nintendo version, but they may apply to the Genesis and Turbo-CD versions. Contents 0. Town of Redmont 1. Tigray Quarry (first visit) Power and Sheild Rings, Bosses 1 and 2 2. Ilvern Ruins Bosses 3 and 4 3. Tigray Quarry (second visit) Timer Ring, Boss 5 4. Eldam Mountains Heal Ring, Bosses 6 and 7 5. Ballacetine Castle Protection Ring, Bosses 8, 9, 10 and 11 6. Galaban's Island Bosses 12 and 13 0. Town of Redmont Redmont, like Minea in Ys, is a mining town. I guess it had to be a mining town. Crop fields just don't make as nice an RPG maze as dark, unkept mines do. The people don't eat, go to the bathroom or sleep. They just walk aimlessly and spit out clues. At least these people are smart enough to build a wall around the city to keep the monsters out. There are only two shops in this game. One is a arms shop and the other is an item shop. When you first enter, follow Dogi to the inn. Then go to the front of the town. The townspeople exclaim that their leader, Edgar, is trapped in the mine by monsters. From this obvious hint you may start you quest... Arms shop (the only one in the game) Short Sword 600 +10 STR Broad Sword 8,000 +50 STR Leather Armor 300 +10 DEF Chain Mail 1,500 +30 DEF Banded Mail 12,000 +43 DEF Wood Shield 200 +10 DEF Large Shield 6,000 +32 DEF Banded Shield 10,000 +44 DEF Items shop (the only one in the game) Herb 100 (The medicine in Ys 1 was less reasonably priced at 1,000). Recharge Ring 100 You can also recharge your ring by defeating enemies. Each enemy you defeat gives you 1 ring point. Rechanging you ring to it's 255 point maximum can be very tedious this way. Brocia's Secret Medicine 1,000 It gives you 50 ring points. You can use it twice before it dissapears. Mirror Of Illusion 500 This stuns all enemies. It can only be used once or twice though. Amulet 1,000 Damages all ememies on the screen. It only has 3 charges. Fairy's Necklace 50,000 I do not know what this does. 1. Tigray Quarry (first visit) Just as in Ys 1 for the SMS, Adol always heals when he is outside. In Ys III, he heals really fast when he is outside. However all the monsters are in the dungeons this time... Fight the monsters in the front of the quarry until you are level 6 or 7. Also, look for two items. In the room to the lower left of TIGRAY MINE 2, there is a Power Ring. This ring gives you double attack strength. However, it drains your ring power as you wear it. In TIGRAY MINE 3 is Robert' Pendant. Take it to his old mother in Redmont. She will give you the Shield Ring. This ring gives you double defense strength. Once you are level 6 or 7, go to the area below the box with Robert's Pendant. There, a blond-haired man named Chester bullies poor Duey. Duey gives you the Wearhouse Key. Take it to the room in the upper right of TIGRAY MINE 2. Open the door to fight the first boss. BOSS #1: DULAN (The green cape with no feet) Arm yourself with a power ring. Stay close to him so you can hit him. Duck to avoid his fire balls. Also move to avoid his swords that fall from the sky. With the power ring, this fight is pretty easy. Once he falls you get healed, and you get a Long Sword. Long Sword +35 STR Now go back to Duey. He tells you to rescue Edgar from the lower part of the mine. Oh, don't run into the blue jello balls. They can drain your life very quickly. After the waterfall and the passage with the blue jello balls is the next boss. BOSS #2: (Blue Sphinx) Blue Sphinx closes her wings and fires three wave shots. Then she opens her wings. If you are under her wings when she opens them, she hits you with a powerful bolt. Then the pattern repeats. When she starts to fire the three waves, run under her. Then jump and slice her. Finally run out from under her before she fires the bolt. This boss is difficult and takes a bit of practice. It helps to have a herb handy too. If you win, you get the Sun Statue. Now you see Chester bully Edgar. Edgar says he's sorry for involving you before you help him hobble out of the mine. Duey and Edgar ask you to go back to Redmont to report the news. At Redmont, Dogi takes you to see Ellena. She tells you her brother Chester now works for lord McGaya (he's of Scottish-Japanese heratige who dresses like British royalty and owns a nice German castle). They are located in the Ballacetine castle to the north. She also asks you to save Cleric Pierre from the Ilvern ruins. How does this town have a Cleric with no church? Where does every one live if only Edgar and the old lady have houses? Anyway, it's an obvious start to the next quest. 2. Ilvern Ruins Do not go to the PLATFORM IN RUINS area until you are level 10 or 11. Also make sure to buy the Broad Sword. Fight monsters in the rest of the ruins until then. To cross the valley between the two ruins, just equip a sheild ring an run as fast as you can. Also, use the stairs in the INSIDE OF RUINS 2-1 to get to INSIDE OF RUINS 2-2. Here you find the Small Shield. Small Shield +20 DEF In the PLATFORM IN RUINS you see Chester question Cleric Pierre. Then you are captured by two huge blue guards. After that Chester throws you into the dangerous yet easily escapable lava zone. Make sure your ring is at 255 strength before you are dropped. In the lava zone you can not go right because of the lava lake. Go left until you find an entrance to a lower right-hand cavern. Before you go into that cavern, go left to find an unlimited supply of free medicine herbs. You can run right past the fire birds and rolling monsters. You can't just run past the jumping lava that follows you. To avoid the jumping lava, keep running and jump exactly when it jumps. You should be able to get the timing right. Equip the shield ring if you have trouble in the lava zone. BOSS #3: GILAN the fire dragon. His only weak spot is his head. Stand on the highest rock in the middle of the cave and keep swinging. You may equip a power ring to cause more damage per attack or a shield ring to last longer in the fight. You'll hit the fire dragon when it files under you or right next to you. This boss is kinda tough if you don't have much patience. If you win you get the Fire Dragon's Amulet. Oh, to avoid the jumping lava after fighting the fire dragon step back and duck when the lava jumps at you. Then run left until the lava jumps again. Stock up on medicine herbs and return to the river of lava. The river now turns to stone. Go to the right to exit the lava zone. Here Ellena greets you. Didn't she see the monsters out front? She also helps you hide as Chester speaks with Lord Garland, an assistant to Lord McGaya. Then Ellena leads you to the next boss. BOSS #4: (The purple dragon) Jump on the highest (middle) stone and keep swinging. The dragon will swoop down so you can hit him. After one or two hits, jump to the stone on the lower left. This way you can avoid the fire balls he spits. After he flies off, repeat the pattern. IF you win you get The Star Statue. As you leave Chester pulls out a thin brass sword and prepares to challenge you. He isn't even wearing armor. After you iced the dragon I think 'blondie' would be afraid to challenge you. Ellena steps in to save you (actually to save Chester). Chester just tells you to stay out (again) and leaves. Ellena walks you back to town. Ellena leaves to take care of some business. Maybe she found the hidden bathroom in the game... Dogi also leaves, but to see his master. Talk to Edgar. He tells you that Lord McGaya wants the statues. His miners are looking for the second statue in the mine. They probably forgot there are monsters down there... again... He asks you to join forces with him until you say yes. Try saying no. The conversation will never end until you say yes. You get the Timer Ring as a reward. The Timer Ring makes all enemies move at one-half speed. This is the best ring for bosses and tricky areas. This is probably the best item in the game too. 3. Tigray Quarry (second visit) Duey stands at the door. It is in the lower-left corner of the second area in the mine. He finally realized there are monsters in the cavern and that the miners might need help. Go Left as far as you can to get the Shining Crystal. With this item, you can buy Brocia's Secret Medicine from the item shop. Brocia's Secret Medicine is very helpful for this boss. Go down and open the box with the Mission's Tablet for the miners. Then the screen shakes. Then they scatter up the stairs like Mario in Donkey Kong. Go as far left as you can in this cave to get the Plate Mail. Plate Mail +32 DEF Finally, go down to bottom room. To the top-right of that room is the entrance to the boss's lair. Equip your timer ring before you go down there. Also, you should be level 12 or better. BOSS #5: (Brain-in-the-wall) Dodge the bouncing ball and the falling ice-cicles. Now all you need to concentrate on are the brain in the wall and the flying crystals. Time a jump to the brain's ledge between crystal spittings and the brain's fireball cycle. Hit the brain 3 or 4 times, then jump back down before the brain's fireball comes back. Repeat until the brain dies. If you do not have the timer ring, then the crystals and fireball will move too fast. Helpful items are the Medicine Herb and Brocia's Secret Medicine (for the Timer Ring). If you win, you get The Flash Statue. Exit the dungeon and see Edgar. Lord McGaya and Garland are threatening Edgar. Afterwards, they simply walk past you, not noticing that you are heavily armed, and have three of the four statues that they want. After you beat the evil forces in Ys I and II, don't you think at least one surviving evil lacky would warn the other evil lords about you? Then Edgar finally tells you that Lord McGaya plans to revive the demon Galaban. Then Edgar gives you Edgar's Letter to deliver to a hermit in the mountains. 4. Eldam Mountains This area is very short, but the two bosses are difficult. First, make your way to the hut of Dogi's Master. If you have trouble getting past the rock worms in the evil mine, equip the timer ring. Then run and jump past them. They won't have time to sprout. At the hut Dogi's master gives you the Banded Sword. It would be a good idea to buy the Banded Mail and Banded Sheild now. Banded Sword +85 STR Boss #6: (Winged man) He uses the same fighting style as boss #4 (the purple dragon). However, don't jump to dodge his shots. Just stand between the middle (down) shot and the outer (down-right or down-left) shot. You must be at least level 13 to damage him with Power Ring equipped. You must be at least level 14 to damage him without Power Ring equipped. If you defeat him, you get The Judgement Staff. Now go right. When you get to the dragon statue, a hole opens up in the ground. Stock up on Medicine Herb and Brocia's Secret Medicine. Then jump down the cliff. You only have to travel through one evil mine to get to the next boss... Boss #7: (Blue Dragon) Given the statue on the mountain, who would be supprised? The blue dragon's head moves to track you. Then if fires three balls of white fire. If you keep moving, the dragon's head won't move quickly enough to aim at you when it fires. His weak spot is his head. Move quickly to hit him in the head and run back. Repeat until the dragon is dead. You may equip the Power Ring to do more damage per stirke. Or, you might equip the timer ring so the dragon moves more slowly. Brocia's Secret Medicine is handy if this fight goes on too long. If you win, you get The Dark Statue. After that Chester barges in to demand the statues. How do these NPC's just barge into monster infested areas like this? Don't they see how heavily armed you must be to enter here? Shortly after Chester barges in, the exit collapses. Then Chester explains that he wants to help Lord McGaya raise Galaban so Galaban will destroy Ballacetine Castle. This will avenge his village which Lord McGaya destroyed. Then Dogi digs you out (with his bear hands as far as I can see). Dogi and Adol return to the town to find it empty! The townspeople were kidnapped and taken to the castle. Talk to Edgar before you go off the the castle. Oh, Dogi gives you the Heal Ring. If heals you slowly in a dungeon. 5. Ballacetine Castle This isn't the 21 level "tower of the dammed" in Ys 1 that took up half of the game, but it's just as tough. You can exit once you enter, but it is very difficult to do so. Stock up on everything. Make sure you are at least level 13 before you enter. Ellena is here to greet you at the entrance. She waltzes into monster infested castle without a scratch just like her brother Chester. Adol tells here to stay put until he returns. First take the underground passage to the inside of the castle. To kill the large, green monster plants, run up to it and hit it. Then run back to avoid the flying stars. Those things can take off half of your life. Once you get in the castle, try to avoid fights. It just takes too much time and life with these guys. Find the Battle Shield at IN THE CASTLE 9. Then reach the SUMMIT OF THE CASTLE to fight the next boss. Battle Sheild +55 DEF BOSS #8: (Gray Knight with chain and ball) Make sure you have at least 100 health and enough ring points to use the Power Ring. Run next to him and keep swinging. He'll go down before you do. If you win, you get the Garnet Bracellet. Go to the bottom floor and use the Garnet Bracellet on the blue knight. The barrier breaks and he runs. The Battle Armor is below the next room. Then go up and keep right until you find the next boss in the CASTLE COURTYARD. Battle Armor +55 DEF BOSS #9: (Fire Wolf) The Timer Ring or Power Ring is best for this boss. Keep swinging as the wolf jumps over you. If it breathes fire, duck and get close to it to hit it. Also, duck and clobber it when it lands. If you have near full life before this fight, you should win. Here your prize is ... um nothing. It's just a gate keeper. In the MUSIC ROOM (An early gothic cathedral with no crosses or Christian symbols at all) you meet Ellena and Garland. Garland claims he has no more use for McGaya and dares you to follow him. You tell Ellena to stay up (again) and go after Garland. Jump past the purple bouncing monsters and kill the monster plants as before. Then go down until you get to the prison. They tell you the blue knight has the key. BOSS #10: JILDUROS The Blue Knight If you do this right you shouldn't get hit. Run up to him. Hit him once. Then immediately run back or he'll hit you with his axe. Repeat until he is dead. Your prize is the Prison Key. Now free the three prisoners. One is Robert, the old lady's son. The other is Cleric Pierre. Finally you meet the solider who gives you the Blue Bracelette. The soilder will free the townspeople, who are in a unseen NPC prison. Next you enter the final part of the castle, the 19th-century clock tower. The Scottish-Japanese king in royal English dress with a German castle that has a gothic catherdral with no crosses or pictures of Jesus has a 19th-century clock tower? Did I mention the Roman sewer system? This game is pure fantasy. I guess the purple wildcat in the intro should have been my first clue... In CLOCK TOWER 1 there is a Protection Ring on the top-left side. This is the best item in the game. Your ring points drain twice as fast, but you are invincible for the duration. In CLOCK TOWER 2 there is a Flame Sword kept in a wooden chest. Maybe the sword just has a flame on/off switch. Defeat the soilder immediately after CLOCK TOWER 3 and a chain will come down. Jump onto it. It takes you to the top of the bell tower. From here, take the bridge to the next (and fourth, which is too much for an action game) boss... Flame Sword +110 STR BOSS #11: GARLAND You can beat Garland without the Protection Ring, but why? Actually, his fighting style is similar to boss #2, except that he changes locations. If you are next to him when he appears, you can run past him and get behind him. Then slice him. I suggest an easier way. Since you've probably used you Herb Medicine, Brocia's Secret Medicine and most of your hit points, you'd probably suggest this to. Accumulate at least 140 ring points. Then go meet Garland. When he starts to materialize as a monster, go to the equipment menu. Equip the Protection Ring. Then exit the equipment menu and hold down on the attack button. Garland will keep trying to shock you, to no avail. As long as you started with at least 140 ring points, you'll last longer that he does. After you defeat Garland, Lord McGaya yeilds to you. He gives you The Dark Knight statue and tells you to stop Galaban at Gilligan's.. no.. wait.. Galaban's Island. As you leave you meet Ellena. She's snuck into a monster infested dungeon for the third time. Just as she's about to jump you Galaban breaks the bridge beneath her and teleports her away. Although you beat four bosses in one dungeon, defeated an evil king and saved an entire town of people, you moodily shelp on back to Redmont. The townspeople are overjoyed to be free. At least two chicks invite you to the party that night (hint, hint). Edgar gives you the Ogre's Ball of Fire before you set out for Galaban's island. 6. Galaban's Island Adol takes a tiny sail boat to Galaban's Island. It looks more like a big cave than an island. The Evil Knight statue opens the entrance. When you get into the dark maze, equip the Ogre's ball of fire. A search light will go back and forth, giving you partial visibility. If you see a skeleton, disequip Ogre's ball of fire. Then you see the skeletons and not the background. This maze is a bit tricky, so you might use this map. Please not that this map is NOT to scale. /----\ Entrance ---\ +-------------+-----/ \----+ \ | | | -------------+ | | /---+ /------------+ | /--+-----/ | | / | | /----A +---+ | +-------/ | | --+ | | | | /------------+ /--\ | | | /---/ \ | | B---/ \--| | +----\ /---\ \---/ \----- Room of 1,000 Pillars The tricky part is falling from point A to point B. When falling, hold left. You should fall into the correct passage, which is above B. In the room of 1,000 Pillars (or less) you meet Garland. To better challenge you, Garland deftly changed the color of his robe. Wow. Galaban should have gotten the fire dragon or the fire fox to guard him. Large enemies are simply large targets. BOSS #12: GARLAND (this guy does not learn from previous mistakes) Use the same strategies as the first time you fought Garland. He jumps around a little more. If you use the protection ring, he is easy to defeat. If you don't use the protection ring, then you are in for quite a challenge. Don't forget that the last boss is immediately after Garland. BOSS #13: GALABAN After Galaban threatens to kill Chester and Ellena, Adol agrees to face him. Save before you jump onto the platform. First take off both of his arms. Jump over the blue balls he fires with his hands. When he hits the ground, run to his side and chop off his arms. This takes a while, so be patient. Without his arms, Galaban attacks with this pattern. First, he fires three blue balls. Each ball causes a moving flame, which will burn you if you are too close to the landing point. After that he does one of two things. One: He reveals his heart and fires a bolt that covers the whole ground. When he does this, jump to avoid the bolt and slice him. Two: He hits the ground, tries to ram you, then reveals his heart. Run to avoid this, then jump to slice him. If you can keep this up without getting hit too often, you will win. The Heal Ring is best to use. The fight lasts too long for the other rings to be effective. The Medicine Herb and Brocia's Secret Medicine should be saved for here. Unfortunately, colliding with Galaban is almost certain death. The reasons some people don't finish this game are: bosses 2, 3, 5, 11 and 13; the Lava Zone in the Ilvern Ruins; the second visit to Tigray Quarry; fighting Garland without the protection ring; and passing through the labyrnith on Galaban's island. After Galaban is defeated the game ends. The ending was... You should beat the game to see it. They did a very good job given the limited memory in the SNES cartridge (in comparison to the TG-CD version). Written by vac999 9/24/2000.
