How wonderful it would be, we dream, to receive a great and marvelous legacy from a wealthy benefactor. But, Wait! We need not dream! For think: we who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ are already HEIRS -heirs of God. For by God's great mercy do we have an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade - kept in heaven for us (I Pet. 1:1-4). Yes, we are heirs of God, but only as CO-HEIRS WITH Christ for no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" solely in Christ Jesus our Lord. (I Cor. 1:20).
God tells us that only the blameless will receive a good inheritance (Prov. 28:10). And who of us was blameless since we were conceived and born in sin, full of evil desires and slaves to the Prince of This World (Rom. 6:12; Eph 2:2; Ps. 51:5). Indeed, our inheritance from our earthly father, Adam, was only eternal death (Gen. 2:15). But thanks be to God that Jesus Christ our Lord came in the flesh - holy, blameless and pure...(Heb. 7:26). He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth (I Pet. 2:22). Yet he was not ashamed to call us brethren (Heb. 2:11); was not ashamed to take upon himself the iniquity of us all; was not ashamed to shed his blood for our transgressions that he might bring us to God (Is. 53:5-7; I Pet. 3:18). And so God has said to us, "I will be a Father to you and you will be my sons and daughters (2 Cor. 6:l8). Now if we are children, then we are heirs, heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ....(Rom. 8:17). And what a heritage is this since Jesus, God's Son and our Redeemer, was appointed heir of all things. So ALL THINGS ARE OURS, whether...the world or life or death, or the present or the future -all are ours - for we are of Christ...(I Cor. 3:21).
So vast, so grand, is our inheritance that, finite as we are, we cannot in this realm of time ever really comprehend its magnitude. As part of our legacy the Lord bestows on us FAVOR and HONOR (Ps. 84:11). He will never stop doing good to us. He will inspire us to fear him so that we will never turn away from his presence (Jer. 32:40). Our God has has blessed us with the power to walk in the glorious FREEDOM of the children of God (Rom. 8:21). Before, we were slaves to sin - free only from the control of righteousness, free only to do iniquity (Rom. 6:20). But now, we are slaves to God - dead to sin and alive unto himself (Rom. 6:11). God has written his laws upon our hearts and given us ears to hear his beloved Son. He has bestowed on us power to delight in his commands and he enables us to serve him without fear. Truly, God has given us power to live as free men, walking before him in holiness and righteousness all our days (Matt. 17:5; Mark 7:14; Ps. 119:3, 6 & 47; I Pet. 2:16; Luke 1:74 & 75).
As HEIRS OF GOD and CO-HEIRS with Christ, our legacy continues in abundance beyond time into eternity. To think that we inherit ALL THINGS in Jesus, our redeemer, seems incomprehensible. Yet, consider...how could less than all things be ours since our inheritance is even GOD HIMSELF for he is our portion forever (Ps. 73:26). The Lord says that whoever believes on his Son shall inherit ETERNAL LIFE. And what is eternal life? That we may know and enjoy forever the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom he has sent (Matt. 19:29;John 3:15; John 17:3). Jesus says to us, "I give you eternal life, and you shall never perish and no one can snatch you out of my hand." (John 10:28).
As heirs of God, we feast on the abundance of his house and drink from his river of delights (Ps. 36:7 & 8). Blessed are we for God has chosen to bring us near to live in his courts (Ps. 65:4). Let us come before the Lord with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song (Ps. 95:2).
Come we that love the Lord And let our joys be known; Join in a song with sweet accord, And thus surround the throne. We of God's grace have found Glory begun below; Celestial fruits on earthly ground From faith and hope may grow. The hill of Zion yields A thousand sacred sweets, Before we reach the heavenly fields Or walk the golden streets. Then let our songs abound And every tear be dry; We're marching through Immanuel's ground To fairer worlds on high. Isaac Watts, 1707
